Questcor Pharmaceuticals, Inc., headquartered in Hayward, California, is a specialty pharmaceutical company serving the acute care and critical care hospital markets. At the time of the report its pipeline included four marketed acute care products, two late-stage critical care drugs in clinical development, a Phase III medication already marketed abroad, and several mid- and early-stage research programs. It was formed through the merger of RiboGene, Inc. and Cypros Pharmaceutical Corporation in November 1999 and traded on the AMEX as QSC.
The company funds development of its acute and critical care drugs partly with revenue from products already sold to hospitals through its own sales force or marketing partners, and uses co-development partnerships to share risk and cost. Its products included Glofil and Inulin for measuring kidney function, Ethamolin for bleeding esophageal varices, the Dermaflo drug-release technology marketed as Neoflo, and Emitasol, an intranasal metoclopramide in Phase III trials, partnered with Roberts Pharmaceutical in North America. In 2000 it licensed parts of its early-stage anti-infective research to Dainippon Pharmaceutical and Rigel Pharmaceuticals.
