Brainstorm Cell Therapeutics, Inc., headquartered in New York City with its main research and development operations in Israel, is a development-stage biotechnology company developing autologous adult stem cell therapies for debilitating, incurable neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) and multiple sclerosis. Since October 2004 it has operated mainly through its Israeli subsidiary, BrainStorm Cell Therapeutics Ltd.
Its patent-pending NurOwn technology, licensed from Ramot at Tel Aviv University, enables the differentiation of bone marrow stem cells into neural-like cells. Because the stem cells come from the patient’s own bone marrow, the treatment avoids donor matching issues and the ethical controversy around embryonic stem cells. NurOwn is based on discoveries by Prof. Eldad Melamed, head of neurology at Rabin Medical Center, and Dr. Daniel Offen at Tel Aviv University’s Felsenstein Medical Research Center. Using NurOwn, the company developed three approaches to generate neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes for transplantation, and was sponsoring pre-clinical animal trials of the first two.
